Ukrainian military operations faced a significant setback last week when a disruption in the Starshield satellite internet service led to the loss of drones valued at over $1 million. According to a senior commander, the drones were en route to Russian military targets when their video feeds abruptly ceased, resulting in many of them falling from the sky.
The commander, Oleh, indicated that the disruption forced his units to suspend nearly all operations for three days. This halt included critical attacks on Russian command posts and fuel hubs, which are essential for slowing down Russian advances and safeguarding Ukrainian troops on the front lines. The incident has heightened tensions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump, as both sides navigate the implications of the service interruption.
Ukrainian officials reported that the initial disruption caused drones to lose their connection at speeds as low as 40 miles per hour, although improvements have been noted. However, issues persist, particularly when drones exceed speeds of 100 mph. This limitation has hindered Ukrainian units that require faster drone operations to effectively target Russian positions. Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky noted that previously, drones using Starshield could operate at speeds up to 250 mph without losing connectivity.
The speed restrictions have also adversely affected Ukraine's air defenses, as interceptor drones must fly faster than incoming threats. General Biletsky described the decision to reduce speed limits as detrimental, stating it undermines the protection of Ukrainian cities. He criticized the Pentagon's actions as unfriendly towards Ukraine's civilian population, especially given the ongoing conflict.
In response to the situation, Zelensky has sought clarity from US officials regarding the changes to Starshield. While some US officials have denied any deliberate service cuts, Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged that a slowdown had occurred but claimed it had since been restored. The Ukrainian military remains concerned about the implications of these disruptions, with Lieutenant Yuriy Butusov highlighting that the interruption has provided Russian forces with a temporary reprieve from drone attacks, ultimately costing Ukrainian lives and resources.
