Supreme Court Calls for Innovative Solutions on Firecracker Ban
During a recent hearing, the Supreme Court emphasized the need for new strategies to enforce firecracker regulations in Delhi-NCR.
The Supreme Court expressed frustration over the repeated violations of its orders regarding firecrackers.
Judges suggested involving public figures like Virat Kohli to raise awareness among the youth about pollution.
The government was questioned on its enforcement measures and compliance reports related to firecracker sales.
In a significant hearing regarding the ongoing firecracker ban in Delhi-NCR, the Supreme Court has reserved its order while expressing dissatisfaction with the enforcement of previous regulations. Justices MM Sundresh and PB Varale noted that the court's directives are frequently ignored, leading them to advocate for innovative approaches to address the issue of pollution during festive seasons.
The bench highlighted that pollution control requires a more proactive stance, particularly in educating younger generations about the environmental impacts of firecrackers. Justice Sundresh remarked on the need to balance celebration with environmental responsibility, indicating that the current generation is often skeptical about such regulations, while the older generation seeks to uphold traditional festivities.
The court also criticized the government's lack of a compliance report following its last order regarding firecrackers, demanding detailed information on enforcement actions, including inspections and prosecutions of violators. Justice Sundresh emphasized that mere issuance of orders is ineffective without a robust enforcement mechanism in place, stating, "I feel our orders are followed more in breach."
In light of the upcoming Diwali festival, the judges called for educational initiatives in schools to promote awareness about pollution and suggested that influential figures, particularly sports icons like Virat Kohli, should be engaged to help sensitize the public. This approach aims to foster a culture of responsibility towards environmental conservation during celebrations.
Looking ahead, the court's next steps will likely involve a thorough review of the government's enforcement strategies and compliance with pollution control measures. The judges have made it clear that they expect significant improvements in the implementation of their orders, as they prepare to issue a balanced directive that considers both the joy of Diwali and the pressing need for environmental protection.
