In a devastating incident early Sunday morning, three individuals lost their lives when a Mini Cooper, allegedly driven by a 19-year-old under the influence of alcohol, crashed into their scooter near Cochin International Airport. The collision occurred at approximately 1:45 AM, resulting in the immediate fatalities of the victims, who were identified as Devika (21), Gopika (22), and Ijaz (21).
The victims, all employees at a handicrafts shop, were returning from a late-night tea outing when the accident took place. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the Mini Cooper was speeding when it struck the scooter from behind, causing the riders to be thrown onto the road. Despite being rushed to nearby hospitals, they succumbed to their injuries shortly after.
Suhail Sajeev, the driver of the Mini Cooper, was apprehended by witnesses at the scene and subsequently handed over to the police. Authorities have indicated that preliminary investigations suggest he was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Blood and urine samples have been collected for further testing to confirm his blood alcohol level and check for any narcotics.
The local police have stated that they are reviewing video evidence from social media, which allegedly shows Sajeev driving at excessive speeds on highways prior to the incident. KS Sudarshan, Superintendent of Police for Ernakulam Rural, mentioned that forensic examinations of the vehicle are underway to gather more evidence regarding the circumstances of the crash.
As the investigation continues, the community is left mourning the loss of three young lives. The accused driver is expected to undergo a medical examination and will be presented before a magistrate later today.
