On Tuesday afternoon, the Supreme Court of India welcomed three new judges, marking a significant addition to its ranks. The judges who took their oaths are Justice Sunita Agarwal, Justice DK Upadhyay, and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, each bringing a wealth of experience from their previous roles as Chief Justices in various High Courts.

The appointments were officially notified by the Central government on Monday, following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium made on September 28. This decision reflects the ongoing efforts to strengthen the judiciary and ensure that the Supreme Court operates at optimal capacity. With these new appointments, the court's working strength has increased to 37 judges, just one shy of its sanctioned strength of 38.

Justice Sunita Agarwal, who previously served as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, has a notable legal career that began in December 1990. She graduated from Awadh University in 1989 and was appointed as a judge in November 2011. Justice Agarwal is set to retire from the Supreme Court in April 2031. Justice DK Upadhyay, another prominent figure, has a background as the Chief Standing Counsel for Uttar Pradesh before his elevation to the bench. He has held significant positions, including Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court since January 2025.

Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, who has served as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court and later the Telangana High Court, also brings extensive judicial experience. His legal journey began in 1990, and he has held various roles within the judiciary, including acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. Each of these judges is expected to contribute significantly to the Supreme Court's functioning and the delivery of justice in India.

Looking ahead, the Supreme Court's enhanced strength is anticipated to facilitate a more efficient judicial process, addressing the backlog of cases more effectively. As the court continues to evolve, the focus will remain on maintaining judicial integrity and ensuring timely justice for all citizens.
