Rajesh Bindal Takes Charge as NCLAT Chairperson
Former Supreme Court Justice Rajesh Bindal has been appointed as the chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal.
Rajesh Bindal confirmed his appointment as NCLAT chairperson.
He previously served as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
His appointment follows the retirement of Justice Ashok Bhushan.
Former Supreme Court Justice Rajesh Bindal has officially been appointed as the chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). This announcement was confirmed by Justice Bindal himself, marking a significant transition in the leadership of the tribunal.
Justice Bindal retired from the Supreme Court on April 15, 2023, after a distinguished tenure of over three years. Prior to his elevation to the Supreme Court in February 2023, he served as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, where he gained considerable experience in judicial matters.
The timing of this appointment is noteworthy, as it comes just months after Justice Ashok Bhushan completed his term as NCLAT chairperson on July 4, 2026. Following Justice Bhushan's retirement, Justice Yogesh Khanna, a judicial member of the tribunal, was appointed as the officiating chairperson starting July 5, with his term later extended by the Central government in October.
Justice Bindal's new role is particularly significant given the ongoing discussions in the Supreme Court regarding the operations of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). As chairperson, he will oversee critical cases related to corporate insolvency, restructuring, and competition law, which are vital to the economic landscape of the country.
Looking ahead, Justice Bindal's leadership is expected to influence the direction of corporate law adjudication in India. His extensive judicial background positions him well to address the complexities of cases that come before the NCLAT, and stakeholders will be keenly observing his approach in the coming months.
