In a significant ruling, an additional district and sessions court in Akot has sentenced Shailesh Arun Waghode, a 38-year-old resident of Patsul village, to life imprisonment for the rape of an 82-year-old woman. The incident took place in December 2023 at the victim's home in Akola district, where Waghode was found guilty of entering the residence and committing the heinous act.
The court, presided over by Additional District and Sessions Judge B M Patil, also imposed a fine of Rs 71,000 on Waghode. This amount is to be paid to the survivor as compensation once the appeal period has lapsed. The ruling underscores the court's commitment to addressing crimes against vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly.
The prosecution presented a strong case against Waghode, detailing how he allegedly assaulted the elderly woman by forcefully banging her head against a wall before the sexual assault occurred. The case was initiated following the woman's complaint, which prompted the Dahihanda police to register a formal case against the accused.
During the trial, the prosecution examined seven witnesses to substantiate their claims. Government prosecutor Ajit Deshmukh played a key role in representing the prosecution, ensuring that the evidence presented was compelling enough to secure a conviction.
This ruling not only serves justice for the victim but also sends a strong message about the legal system's stance on sexual violence, particularly against the elderly population. The case highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and protective measures for vulnerable individuals in society, as well as the importance of swift legal action in such serious matters.
