Security cooperation discussions include tackling organized crime and terrorism.

In a recent conversation, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized their commitment to enhancing the relationship between India and Canada. The dialogue, described by PM Modi as 'warm and productive,' focused on fostering cooperation in trade, energy, technology, security, and cultural exchanges. Both leaders expressed their intention to build on the existing positive momentum in bilateral ties, aiming for tangible outcomes in their strategic partnership.

The discussions come at a crucial time as India and Canada are engaged in the fifth round of negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Both nations are optimistic about concluding this agreement by December, which is expected to significantly boost bilateral trade. PM Modi highlighted that the ambitious CEPA could elevate trade to approximately CAD 70 billion (around $49 billion) by 2030. Carney previously indicated that negotiations were progressing well and extended an invitation for PM Modi to visit Canada in December.

PM Modi's anticipated visit, scheduled for December 11-13, would mark his first bilateral trip to Canada since diplomatic relations were strained due to a previous incident involving a Khalistan separatist. His last visit to Canada was in June 2025 for the G7 Summit, where he met Carney. The upcoming trip is seen as a pivotal step in revitalizing the relationship between the two countries.

In addition to trade discussions, security cooperation is also a significant focus of the ongoing dialogue. Recent bilateral security talks have underscored the importance of advancing CEPA negotiations while exploring deeper defense collaboration. National security advisers from both countries reviewed progress on security and law enforcement cooperation, which is guided by a Security Work Plan established earlier this year.

The joint statement from the security dialogue indicated a commitment to further practical cooperation, including structured discussions on cyber security and economic security. Both nations agreed to enhance coordination in combating transnational organized crime, terrorism, and other security threats. As the two leaders continue their discussions, the outcomes of their collaboration could have lasting implications for both nations and their roles on the global stage.
