Global market cues show mixed trends, with US futures gaining but Asian markets declining.

The Indian stock market is anticipated to open on a negative note on October 22, 2026, as indicated by the GIFT Nifty's performance. This comes amid a backdrop of mixed trading in Asian markets and a third consecutive day of gains in US stock futures, although they faced pressure during extended trading hours on Wednesday.

Market analysts attribute the cautious outlook to persistently high crude oil prices and rising geopolitical tensions, which are dampening investor sentiment. WTI crude is hovering around $98 per barrel, while Brent crude has surpassed $110, raising macroeconomic concerns. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, noted that sustained energy price pressures could hinder hopes for a robust recovery in domestic equities.

On Wednesday, the equity benchmark indices continued their downward trend, with the Sensex dropping 143 points. The 30-share BSE Sensex settled at 73,709.69, after experiencing an intraday high of 74,682.19 and a low of 73,229.45. The NSE Nifty 50 also closed lower, down 77.60 points at 22,811.35, after reaching an early high of 23,120.90. Ajit Mishra, SVP of research at Religare Broking, commented on the market's volatility, stating that profit booking and macroeconomic concerns led to a sharp reversal in market performance.

The GIFT Nifty was trading around 22,682, indicating a negative opening for Indian indices. Analysts suggest that the Sensex outlook remains sideways, with resistance near the 74,650 mark. Sachin Gupta from Choice Equity Broking emphasized the importance of maintaining levels above 73,500 to ensure stability, while a drop below 73,200 could lead to further declines.

Looking ahead, the market's trajectory will depend on key support and resistance levels. Osho Krishan from Angel One highlighted that the Nifty 50's performance remains cautious, with a critical level at 22,720. A breach below this could accelerate losses, while a sustained move above 23,150 is necessary to revive buying interest and improve market sentiment. Investors are advised to stay vigilant as the market navigates these turbulent conditions.
