Israel has announced that Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar will be awarded the Presidential Award for Civil Heroism for his pivotal role in averting a major aviation disaster aboard flydubai flight FZ1073. President Isaac Herzog made this declaration during a ceremony in Jerusalem, where he also honored six Israeli passengers who played crucial roles in thwarting an alleged hijacking attempt last week.
The incident occurred when the co-pilot, identified as Hamam al-Hammami from Oman, reportedly attacked Captain Machchhar with a crash axe in the cockpit, attempting to seize control of the aircraft. The flight, which was carrying 174 passengers to Tel Aviv, transmitted emergency signals and made a rapid descent from 34,000 feet to 17,000 feet before landing in Saudi Arabia. The UAE has classified this event as an attempted terrorist attack.
During the ceremony, President Herzog praised the bravery of both Machchhar and the six Israeli passengers: Tali Manes, Zvika Manes, Yaniv Hayoun, Dr. Shota Musayev, Asaf Rajuan, and Or Pardilov. Each of these individuals played a significant role in subduing the co-pilot and ensuring the safety of all aboard. Herzog emphasized the importance of their actions in preventing what could have been a catastrophic aviation disaster.
As Captain Machchhar continues his recovery in a hospital in Abu Dhabi, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has reported that he is responding well to treatment. The Indian embassy in the UAE has maintained regular communication with him and his family. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that Machchhar's health is improving, and he is expected to receive the award once he is fit to travel.
Looking ahead, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has extended an invitation to Captain Machchhar to attend Israel's Independence Day celebrations, highlighting his heroism and the bond between India and Israel. The Presidential Medal for Civilian Heroism, established after the October 7 Hamas-led attacks, aims to recognize civilians who exhibit extraordinary bravery in life-threatening situations. This award will further solidify Machchhar's status as a hero not just in India, but also in Israel and globally.
