The INDIA bloc is convening an online meeting on Thursday evening to outline a strategy for protests regarding alleged electoral irregularities. This comes as the opposition intensifies its campaign demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, amid ongoing concerns over the integrity of the electoral process.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will preside over the meeting, which aims to finalize preparations for a significant rally in Delhi on November 1. The opposition coalition has raised serious allegations against the Election Commission, particularly concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which they claim has facilitated electoral manipulation.
The push for Kumar's resignation gained traction following reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on multiple occasions regarding decisions made during the SIR process. The Election Commission has defended its actions, stating that differing opinions during discussions are a normal part of institutional processes.
On October 12, during a 'March for Democracy' in Delhi, Rahul Gandhi publicly called for Kumar's resignation, suggesting that larger forces were involved in the alleged electoral misconduct. He also indicated that around 200 government officials were in contact with the opposition, sharing critical information. Following this, Gandhi hosted a gathering of INDIA bloc leaders at his residence, where they reaffirmed their commitment to continue the fight against perceived electoral malpractice.
The upcoming meeting is expected to set the stage for the next phase of the opposition's campaign, focusing on mobilizing support ahead of the November 1 rally. The INDIA bloc aims to ensure that their concerns regarding electoral integrity are addressed and that the issue remains at the forefront of public discourse.
