Ilhan Omar's Home Raided by Federal Agents Amid Immigration Probe
Federal agents executed a search warrant at Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's residence as part of an immigration fraud investigation.
The raid is linked to an ongoing federal investigation into Omar's immigration paperwork.
Allegations include potential fraud related to documents submitted by her late father.
Omar has previously faced scrutiny over her immigration history and has denied all allegations.
Early Monday morning, federal agents conducted a search of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's home in the Washington, D.C. area as part of a federal investigation concerning her immigration documentation. The operation was carried out by Homeland Security Investigations under a warrant authorized by the court, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Department of Justice.
The focus of the investigation reportedly centers on immigration forms filled out by Omar's deceased father during her childhood. Omar, a Somali-born lawmaker representing Minnesota, has faced allegations regarding her immigration status, including claims that she married her brother to facilitate his entry into the United States. She has vehemently rejected these accusations, labeling them as "absurd and offensive."
This raid signifies a notable escalation in the ongoing investigation, which was acknowledged publicly by border czar Tom Homan in September. While Homan did not disclose specific details about the case, he emphasized the principle that "no one’s above the law," and did not dismiss the possibility of revoking Omar's U.S. citizenship if wrongdoing is established.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has also indicated that the investigation could extend beyond Omar's 2009 marriage, suggesting that removal proceedings may follow if any illegal activities are confirmed. Reports indicate that neither the Department of Justice nor Omar's office provided immediate comments regarding the raid.
The investigation occurs against a backdrop of heightened scrutiny on Minnesota's immigration enforcement, particularly from the Trump administration, amid a broader Medicaid fraud scandal that could involve billions of dollars. The state, home to the largest Somali community in the U.S., has also faced tensions following incidents involving federal immigration agents that resulted in the deaths of U.S. citizens, prompting protests and criticism of the administration's immigration policies ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Omar, who married political consultant Tim Mynett in March 2020, has been a vocal critic of President Trump and a prominent member of the progressive group known as the Squad.
