Delhi Police have initiated a First Information Report (FIR) against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other participants, for their alleged forcible entry into the Akashvani Bhavan during a protest organized by the INDIA bloc on October 6, 2026. This action follows a significant protest march that aimed to reach the Election Commission of India office, where approximately 260 individuals, including ten Members of Parliament, were detained by police for violating barricades despite repeated orders to disperse.
The complaint leading to the FIR was lodged by staff members of Akashvani, who claimed that Gandhi and his associates entered the premises against their will. While the protest was intended to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, police stated that no prior permission was obtained for the march, which led to the enforcement of restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in New Delhi.
According to police reports, the protest escalated when leaders, including Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, attempted to stage a sit-in after being blocked from proceeding to the Election Commission. Following this, law enforcement intervened, resulting in the removal and detention of the leaders. The police emphasized that the protest was unauthorized, which contributed to the decision to file charges against the involved parties.
Congress MP Imran Masood defended the actions of Rahul Gandhi, asserting that he was not involved in any forcible entry and was simply accompanied by fellow MPs. He criticized the authorities for denying the Opposition the chance to engage with election officials, stating, "The institutions belong to the country, not to any political party." Masood also indicated that the Opposition would not be intimidated by the FIR, vowing to continue their protests.
This incident is part of a broader series of protests in Delhi, where various groups are calling for accountability regarding the electoral process and demanding action against the Chief Election Commissioner. The political climate remains tense as the Opposition seeks to amplify their demands in light of the recent events.
