In New Delhi, ongoing protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar have prompted the Delhi Police to issue a stern warning to demonstrators. On Thursday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shrishti Pandey stated that any gathering under Section 163 would be deemed illegal, urging protesters to avoid targeting police personnel during their demonstrations.
DCP Pandey expressed concern over what she termed 'wrongful influence' affecting the youth, suggesting that it was steering them towards inappropriate actions. She emphasized that aggression towards uniformed officers, who are executing their lawful duties, sends a negative message to society. "Abusing police personnel does not convey a positive image," she remarked, while defending the police's commitment to public service.
The police have reported several incidents of violence against their officers during the protests. Constable Ankit Kasana recounted being attacked and bitten by demonstrators while attempting to manage the situation during a protest led by Congress supporters. He described how he was surrounded and assaulted while trying to facilitate the safe passage of a vehicle carrying detained Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
In light of the protests, the Delhi Police have registered multiple FIRs against demonstrators for various offenses, including assaulting police officers and obstructing government work. This comes amid heightened tensions over alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process, prompting the deployment of additional security personnel to protect the Chief Election Commissioner.
Looking ahead, the situation remains tense as Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced further protests by the INDIA bloc MPs. They plan to hold a peaceful sit-in at Gandhi Smarak in Delhi, marking the third consecutive day of demonstrations against the CEC. The police continue to monitor the situation closely, reiterating their commitment to maintaining order and safety in the capital.
