The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) held a significant protest at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on October 8, coinciding with YouTuber Dhruv Rathee's birthday celebration. The gathering aimed to voice opposition against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, which has been criticized for allegedly undermining voter rights. Notable attendees included actor Prakash Raj, who called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing him of acting under the influence of political leaders.
The protest was marked by various slogans, including 'Ek kachori do samosa,' and a unique 'Chappal protest' aimed at highlighting issues of women's safety. Participants expressed solidarity with women while demanding action against crimes committed against them. The event also featured a 'People's Tribunal' where individuals affected by the SIR could share their experiences regarding wrongful deletions from voter lists.
CJP's founder Abhijeet Dipke and other leaders emphasized the need for transparency in the electoral process. They alleged that the SIR was not just a technical exercise but a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise specific groups, particularly those opposing the ruling party. Rathee, while addressing the crowd, stated that he was not there for a regime change but to advocate for accountability from the Election Commission of India.
The protest's impact extended beyond Bengaluru, as the Delhi government announced the closure of all liquor shops for two days, citing the need to maintain public order during the protest. This decision reflects the authorities' concern over potential unrest related to the ongoing demonstrations.
Looking ahead, the CJP plans to continue its advocacy against the SIR and will hold further protests, including one scheduled for October 10 in Delhi. The organization aims to maintain momentum in their campaign for electoral integrity and women's rights, urging citizens to join their cause in reclaiming democracy and ensuring fair representation in the electoral process.
