The recently inaugurated Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Rail's phase II network has transformed the travel experience for commuters, slashing the journey time to under 40 minutes. Previously, this route would take nearly an hour by road during peak traffic hours, making it a significant improvement for daily travelers.
The excitement surrounding the new 14.6-km stretch is palpable, with thousands of commuters eager to experience the benefits of the phase II network. This stretch is expected to enhance mobility for various purposes, including work, shopping, and leisure activities, by connecting the western suburbs with the city’s core areas more efficiently.
Local residents have shared their anticipation for the new service. Thiruvikraman, a Kattupakkam resident, highlighted the convenience of the new line, stating that his previous hour-long commute to Vadapalani was a source of stress, especially during peak hours. He noted that the cost of cab rides added to the burden, making the new metro option a welcome change. Similarly, engineering students Harshita B. and Boomika D. expressed their enthusiasm for the reduced travel time, which will significantly benefit their daily commutes from Nazarathpet to Vadapalani and Anna Nagar.
The phase II network introduces several modern features, including charging points and half-height platform screen doors at elevated stations, enhancing safety and convenience for passengers. Unlike the first phase, which included a separate ladies' coach, the new trains consist of three coaches, with designated areas for women marked by a pink belt and hand grips.
Looking ahead, the Chennai Metro Rail authorities are optimistic about the impact of this new stretch on local transportation. As more commuters begin to utilize the service, further expansions and improvements to the metro network are anticipated, promising to further ease travel across the city.
