Bihar NDA Faces Turmoil as Independent MLCs Reconsider BJP Membership
Two Independent candidates who defeated JDU in Bihar's MLC polls now claim they only supported BJP, raising legal and political questions.
Two Independent MLCs, Banshidhar Brajwasi and Dr. Rahul Raj, initially claimed to join BJP but later clarified they only supported the party.
Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav demands disqualification of the MLCs under the anti-defection law, questioning their formal membership.
JDU leader Anand Pushkar criticizes BJP for not honoring alliance commitments during the elections, alleging broken promises.
In a significant political twist in Bihar, two Independent Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) who recently triumphed over candidates from the Janata Dal (United) [JDU] have now backtracked on their initial claims of joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The two MLCs, Banshidhar Brajwasi and Dr. Rahul Raj, won their respective seats in the recent elections but have since stated they merely extended their support to the BJP, raising concerns about compliance with the anti-defection law.
The controversy erupted after the two MLCs attended a BJP event where they were seen aligning with the party. Initially, both declared to the media that they had officially joined the BJP. However, following backlash and scrutiny regarding their membership status, they took to social media to clarify that their association was not formal but rather a show of support. BJP state president Sanjay Saraogi echoed their statement, suggesting that their support did not equate to formal party membership.
The implications of this situation have drawn the attention of Bihar's political landscape. Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition, has called for the disqualification of the two MLCs, citing the anti-defection law which states that an Independent member is disqualified if they join a political party post-election. Yadav accused the BJP of undermining constitutional principles and demanded prompt action against the MLCs, emphasizing the need for clarity on their political affiliation.
This political turmoil has also spotlighted the dynamics within the ruling NDA alliance. JDU leader Anand Pushkar has raised questions regarding the BJP's commitment to alliance principles, particularly after both Independent candidates defeated JDU nominees in the elections. Pushkar criticized BJP leaders for failing to uphold their promises during the campaign, alleging that the party’s actions contradicted the cooperative spirit expected within the alliance.
Looking ahead, the situation remains fluid as the Bihar Legislative Council Chairman is tasked with determining the disqualification cases under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution. The forthcoming decisions will be pivotal in shaping the political landscape in Bihar, particularly regarding the integrity of party alliances and adherence to electoral commitments.
