A 21-year-old man named Hemanth has been apprehended following a brutal chainsaw assault on a 14-year-old student, Gopika, in a classroom in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh. The attack took place on October 31, during school hours, while Gopika was attending a lesson at Zilla Parishad High School in Raptadu. Hemanth reportedly entered the classroom and unleashed the chainsaw on Gopika, inflicting life-threatening injuries to her head, neck, and torso.
Witnesses described the horrifying scene, with Gopika's classmate, Lakshmi, recalling the moment the attack occurred around 10:30 AM. Lakshmi stated that Hemanth entered the classroom with the chainsaw, attacked Gopika in front of the teacher, and then turned on her as she attempted to intervene. The chaos led to students fleeing the classroom as Hemanth escaped on his motorcycle. The teacher present during the incident expressed her shock, stating she was paralyzed with fear as the attack unfolded.
Reports indicate that Hemanth had previously proposed to Gopika, but she rejected his advances, which is believed to be the motive behind the violent act. School authorities initially mistook Hemanth for a construction worker when he was seen on the premises with the chainsaw prior to the attack. Following the incident, both Gopika and Lakshmi were rushed to Anantapur government general hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Medical professionals reported that Gopika arrived in an unconscious state, suffering from extensive injuries due to the chainsaw. Doctors indicated that she would require plastic surgery to address the severe damage to her face and neck, although they noted that her internal organs appeared unharmed. The medical team is closely monitoring her condition, which remains critical.
The incident has sparked outrage and concern among the local community and officials. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed his dismay over the attack and instructed authorities to ensure Gopika receives the necessary medical care. He also emphasized the need for swift legal action against Hemanth, who is currently in police custody and undergoing interrogation. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack is ongoing, with a case formally registered against the assailant.
