A tragic air strike near the disputed Sudan-Egypt border has resulted in the deaths of at least 72 miners, according to reports from a Sudanese rights organization. The incident occurred at a gold mining site in the northern Wadi area, where survivors recounted chaotic scenes following the attack. The rights group, Emergency Lawyers, has attributed the air raid to the Egyptian military, which has not yet issued an official response.
This incident marks the second air strike in the mountainous border region of Jabal al-Uqaydat this year, with a similar attack in June resulting in the deaths of 23 workers. The Egyptian military had previously stated that its operations were aimed at illegal gold mining activities within its borders. The border between Sudan and Egypt remains contentious, with both nations claiming the resource-rich Halaib Triangle.
Images circulating on social media depict numerous bodies among the rubble, with some miners describing the horror of the air strike. Emergency Lawyers emphasized that the attack occurred within Sudanese territory and reflects a broader pattern of aggression by Egyptian authorities to assert control over Sudan's natural resources. The organization stated, "The repeated attacks on the gold and mineral-rich border regions reflect a desire by Egyptian authorities to expand and assert control over Sudan’s natural resources."
The ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has seen over 200,000 fatalities since April 2023, has exacerbated a humanitarian crisis, pushing many into the perilous gold mining sector that supports both warring factions. The rugged terrain of the border region, rich in minerals, has become a focal point of conflict and illegal activities, including arms smuggling and human trafficking.
Looking ahead, the international community is urged to address the escalating violence and humanitarian needs in Sudan. As tensions between Sudan and Egypt continue to rise, further developments in this volatile region are anticipated, particularly regarding military operations and their implications for civilian safety.
