MSETCL has chosen six banks for its IPO, potentially raising $800 million.
The IPO will primarily involve a sale by the Maharashtra government.
MSETCL operates the largest electricity transmission network in Maharashtra.
Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Co. (MSETCL) has appointed six investment banks to assist in a planned initial public offering (IPO) that could generate up to $800 million. This move marks a significant step for the power transmission utility, which serves the wealthiest state in India. The selected banks include SBI Capital Markets Ltd., Axis Capital Ltd., Motilal Oswal Investment Advisors Ltd., Avendus Capital Pvt., IIFL Capital Services Ltd., and HDFC Bank Ltd.
The IPO is expected to primarily consist of an offer for sale from the Maharashtra government, which owns the holding company, alongside a smaller issuance of new shares by MSETCL itself. While discussions are ongoing, the specifics regarding the size, valuation, and advisory team may still evolve as the process unfolds. Representatives from both MSETCL and the involved banks have not yet provided comments on the matter.
India’s IPO landscape has seen a resurgence following a slow start in 2026, with companies raising approximately $14 billion through initial share offerings this year alone. This figure is a contrast to the record $22 billion raised in 2025. Notably, the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. recently completed a $2.4 billion offering, and Jio Platforms Ltd. is gearing up for what could be the largest IPO in Indian history this month.
The potential listing of MSETCL aligns with Maharashtra's strategy to leverage equity markets for its state-owned power utilities. Additionally, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. is also in the process of selecting investment banks for its own IPO, which could raise between $500 million and $1 billion, according to sources familiar with the situation.
MSETCL plays a critical role in the state's electricity infrastructure, responsible for transmitting power from generation sites to distribution networks across Maharashtra, which has a population exceeding 128 million, including Mumbai. The company operates a vast network comprising 51,518 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and 742 extra-high-voltage substations, positioning itself as India’s largest state transmission utility.
