Wadettiwar criticizes the government for its anti-OBC stance and calls for empirical data before elections.

In a significant call for action, Congress Legislature Party Leader Vijay Wadettiwar has urged the Maharashtra government to conduct local body elections with a 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs). Speaking in Nagpur, Wadettiwar emphasized that his party would support this initiative, highlighting the potential adverse effects of not implementing the quota.

Wadettiwar expressed concerns over the anticipated loss of OBC representation, estimating that around 3,000 to 4,000 seats could be lost in zilla parishads and panchayat samitis if the quota is not applied. He pointed to the recent gram panchayat elections as a clear indicator of the diminishing OBC presence, noting that in his own Sindewahi taluka, only one sarpanch position was reserved for OBCs.

The MLA from Bramhapuri stressed the importance of waiting for comprehensive data that informs reservation policies before proceeding with the elections. He suggested that the elections should be delayed until empirical data is fully available or until a new census is conducted, asserting that this would ensure fair representation for OBCs.

Wadettiwar further warned that the upcoming elections for nagar panchayats and municipal councils could also suffer significant losses for OBC candidates. He accused the current government of neglecting the OBC community, stating, "This government’s stand is extremely anti-OBC. It throws a few crumbs in the name of OBCs and takes some ministers into the cabinet, but does nothing for their rights."

Looking ahead, the demand for a 27% OBC quota in local elections is likely to gain traction as the elections approach. The Congress party’s stance may influence public opinion and pressure the government to reconsider its position on OBC reservations, particularly in light of the upcoming electoral challenges.
