NMC staff will face action for neglecting public toilet hygiene.
Complaints must be addressed within 24 hours, with a clear accountability structure.
Next court hearing is set for November 30.
In a decisive move, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced that its officials and staff will face disciplinary action for failing to maintain cleanliness at public and community toilets. This declaration comes in response to a public interest litigation highlighting the unsanitary conditions of these facilities, which was discussed during a court hearing on Monday.
The litigation was initiated by advocate Sandeep Badana, who raised concerns about the poor state of public toilets and alleged irregularities in their maintenance. During the hearing, presided over by Justices Anil Kilor and Rajnish Vyas, the NMC outlined its commitment to addressing complaints about unhygienic conditions swiftly, promising corrective actions within 24 hours of receiving a complaint.
To ensure accountability, the NMC has designated sanitation inspectors in each ward to oversee routine cleaning and maintenance of public toilets. These inspectors are responsible for upholding hygiene standards, while zonal officers will monitor their performance to ensure compliance with cleanliness protocols. Complaints regarding sanitation can be lodged with the relevant zonal officer or assistant commissioner, or through the NMC's public grievance portal.
The court was informed that any officers or employees who fail to address complaints, neglect cleanliness, or do not fulfill their assigned responsibilities will face disciplinary proceedings as per service rules. The NMC has assured that it will implement this system effectively and adhere to any future directives from the court.
The next hearing in this matter is scheduled for November 30, where further developments regarding the enforcement of cleanliness standards at public toilets will be discussed. This initiative is expected to enhance the hygiene of public facilities and improve the overall quality of life for Nagpur residents.
