In Nagpur, a political storm has erupted over allegations of mismanagement in the allocation of development funds by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). The opposition has raised serious concerns regarding the processing of proposals amounting to Rs 55 crore, significantly exceeding the approved budget of Rs 30 crore. This discrepancy has prompted Leader of Opposition Sanjay Mahakalkar to formally request an investigation from municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar, urging that all related projects be suspended until the inquiry is concluded.
The weaker sections committee, tasked with implementing development initiatives in economically disadvantaged slum areas, plays a crucial role within the NMC. It is responsible for distributing funds aimed at enhancing infrastructure and civic amenities in these communities. However, recent allegations suggest that the fund distribution process has been compromised, with claims that only a select group of corporators have benefited through contractors, raising questions about transparency and fairness in the allocation process.
Mahakalkar has pointed out that an additional Rs 25 crore worth of projects were approved despite the initial budget cap of Rs 30 crore. He has called for clarity regarding who received these extra funds, highlighting that several corporators have reported not receiving any financial support for their wards despite requests. He has accused contractors of meddling in the allocation process, asserting that established rules were not followed, and has demanded a comprehensive investigation into these claims.
In response to the allegations, Laxmi Hattithele, chairperson of the weaker sections committee, has firmly denied any wrongdoing. She emphasized that the distribution of funds was conducted in strict accordance with established regulations, asserting that all corporators received funding for slum development projects regardless of their political affiliations. Hattithele stated that allocations were made based on the specific needs of the areas served.
Looking ahead, the situation remains tense as the opposition continues to push for accountability and transparency in the NMC's fund allocation practices. The municipal commissioner is expected to address these allegations and determine the next steps, including whether an official inquiry will be initiated. The outcome of this political controversy could have significant implications for the governance of Nagpur and the management of municipal funds in the future.
