Residents express frustration over lack of accountability and planning by local authorities.
As the Diwali shopping season unfolds, Nagpur is experiencing significant traffic disruptions, revealing the shortcomings of both the traffic police and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) in managing the influx of shoppers. Major commercial areas such as Mahal, Itwari, and Sitabuldi are particularly affected, with gridlocks becoming a common sight due to haphazard parking and unauthorized vendors occupying vital road space.
The situation has been exacerbated by insufficient deployment of traffic personnel at critical junctions, leading to mounting frustration among citizens. Experts have pointed out that this chaos is not a new phenomenon; every year, the city faces similar challenges during the festive season, which suggests a systemic failure in planning and execution by the authorities. A recent legal notice served to municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar highlights the growing discontent regarding the lack of pedestrian safety amid encroachments.
Despite having around 70 personnel dedicated to enforcement, including anti-encroachment squads, the NMC has struggled to manage unauthorized vendors effectively. Residents like Meena Singh have voiced their concerns, questioning the preparedness of the authorities for the predictable surge in traffic. Assistant municipal commissioner Sanjay Kamble acknowledged that the focus has largely been on Sitabuldi Main Road, leaving other areas vulnerable to congestion.
Local corporator Sanjay Balpande criticized the enforcement department for ignoring complaints about illegal vendors, emphasizing that despite directives from the mayor, no significant action has been taken. Residents like Rahul Lanke and Pravin Palkar have echoed similar sentiments, noting that commuting has become increasingly frustrating due to the lack of effective enforcement and planning.
Experts suggest that a comprehensive festive-season strategy should have included designated parking areas, increased traffic personnel at hotspots, and coordinated anti-encroachment efforts. Meanwhile, social worker Deepak Lalwani has urged drivers to adhere to traffic regulations and avoid distractions, emphasizing the importance of safety measures during this busy period.
