In response to the severe drought conditions affecting the region, the Maharashtra government has approved the restoration of electricity supply to public water supply schemes managed by both urban and rural local bodies. This decision, announced on October 30, aims to ensure that residents have access to essential water services during this critical period.

The government resolution (GR) stipulates that local bodies must provide certificates from the collector or chief executive officer confirming that no water tankers are supplying water in the area and that an alternative usable water source is available. This requirement is part of the conditions set for restoring previously disconnected electricity connections.

To restore a cut connection, local bodies are required to pay a security deposit equivalent to one month’s electricity bill, in addition to a reconnection fee. For new connections that have been delayed due to outstanding arrears, the local body must pay the applicable connection charges as per existing regulations before the connection is granted. The GR also allows these payments to be made from various funds, including District Planning Committee funds and scarcity funds.

The implications of this decision are significant for both urban and rural communities in Maharashtra, where water scarcity has become a pressing issue. The restoration of electricity to water supply schemes is expected to alleviate some of the hardships faced by residents during the drought. The State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) has been instructed to expedite the necessary processes to implement these changes.

Looking ahead, the measures outlined in the GR will remain in effect only for the duration of the drought, as specified by government orders. Local bodies are also reminded of their obligation to pay monthly electricity bills promptly, and any ongoing legal matters will be resolved according to court decisions. This initiative reflects the government's commitment to addressing the water crisis and supporting affected communities during this challenging time.
