Authorities in Nagpur, Maharashtra, have uncovered a counterfeit currency operation in a rented room, resulting in the seizure of fake ₹500 notes valued at approximately ₹37 lakh. The discovery was made when the landlord, unable to collect rent for several months, broke into the room and found bundles of counterfeit currency, along with a printer and other printing materials.
The tenant, identified as Pushpak Krishna Bhandarkar, also known as Bendane, had been residing in the Kharbi area of Nagpur for about a year and a half. His rental agreement expired in January, but he continued to occupy the premises without making any payments. When the landlord, Ramesh, requested that he vacate the room, Bhandarkar allegedly threatened him with a knife, prompting Ramesh to report the incident to the Wathoda Police Station.
Upon breaking the lock on Saturday, the landlord discovered bundles of counterfeit notes hidden in a bucket, with additional printing materials scattered across the floor. The police were alerted, and upon arrival, they seized the fake currency and the equipment used in the counterfeiting process. A machine was brought in to count the recovered notes, confirming the total value of the counterfeit currency.
The investigation revealed that Bhandarkar had not been seen for several days, leading authorities to believe he fled to Mumbai. The police are now coordinating efforts to dispatch a team to apprehend him. This incident raises concerns about the prevalence of counterfeit currency operations in the region and the potential impact on the local economy.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement agencies are emphasizing the importance of public vigilance regarding counterfeit currency. They urge citizens to report any suspicious activities related to currency handling. The police are also exploring further leads to uncover the broader network behind this counterfeit operation.
