A minor rental disagreement escalated into a significant counterfeit currency investigation in Nagpur, leading to the seizure of fake notes worth over ₹37 lakh.
1,600 counterfeit Rs 500 notes worth more than ₹37 lakh were seized.
The investigation was triggered by a landlord's complaint over unpaid rent.
Authorities are probing the suspect's identity and the counterfeit operation's scale.
In a surprising turn of events, Nagpur police seized 1,600 counterfeit Rs 500 notes valued at over ₹37 lakh from a rented flat in the Three Star Society, Chaitanya Nagar, on Saturday. The operation was initiated following a complaint from the landlord regarding a minor tenancy dispute with the tenant, Pushpam Bhandane, 29, who had allegedly failed to pay rent for two months.
The investigation began when Ramesh Harde, the flat owner, grew suspicious of Bhandane's activities and requested him to vacate the premises. After Bhandane's refusal to leave, Harde approached the Wathoda police for assistance. Upon arrival, officers found the apartment door locked and were unable to reach Bhandane, whose mobile phone went silent after a brief conversation.
Utilizing a master key, Harde entered the flat, where police discovered a laptop, a printing machine, and a large quantity of counterfeit currency. The presence of A4-sized papers further indicated the operation's scale. This discovery prompted the involvement of the state anti-terrorism squad (ATS) and various intelligence agencies to investigate the counterfeit network's origins and distribution channels.
Authorities are now focused on verifying Bhandane's identity and the legitimacy of the documents he provided during the rental agreement. Investigators are working to ascertain whether Bhandane is indeed his real name and whether the credentials he submitted were authentic. The case raises concerns about the potential economic threat posed by such counterfeit operations.
As the investigation unfolds, police are expected to delve deeper into the counterfeit currency network, aiming to uncover any additional suspects or connections. The outcome of this case may have broader implications for economic security and law enforcement in the region, highlighting the need for vigilance against counterfeit currency operations.
