OpenAI has stated that there are no indications of data theft related to this incident.

Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national employed by OpenAI, was arrested on October 9 for allegedly installing a hidden recording device in the company's executive conference room. The arrest was announced by the Department of Justice, with FBI Director Kash Patel confirming the details of the case, emphasizing the importance of protecting American innovation in super intelligence technology.

The incident reportedly took place around September 30, 2026, when OpenAI personnel discovered the audio recording device concealed in a USB port on a television in the conference room. The device, hidden within toilet paper, is believed to have been installed just two days prior. Surveillance footage indicated that Alfozan had been near the conference room multiple times before the device was found, despite lacking authorization to access the area.

According to the complaint, the meetings held in the executive conference room often involved sensitive discussions about proprietary research, product plans, and other confidential information. Alfozan's activities leading up to the discovery included inquiries about OpenAI's facilities and meetings, as well as interactions with a chatbot account linked to his spouse that discussed technical aspects of audio recording devices.

In addition to the initial device, a second similar recording device was found in a bag that Alfozan left unattended in another room. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a fine of $250,000, along with three years of supervised release. OpenAI has terminated his employment and is cooperating with the ongoing FBI investigation.

OpenAI released a statement confirming the discovery of the device and expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their swift action. They assured that there is no evidence of unauthorized access to sensitive data or proprietary information. The company emphasized its commitment to safeguarding its technology and personnel against various security threats, highlighting this incident as a significant example of the challenges they face in maintaining security.
