Indian Stock Market Faces Weekly Decline Amid Oil Price Surge
The Indian stock market experiences significant losses as geopolitical tensions and rising oil prices impact investor sentiment.
Sensex and Nifty fell over 2% last week, ending a two-week gaining streak.
Mid-cap and small-cap stocks were particularly affected by market corrections.
Analysts predict continued volatility influenced by global economic conditions.
The Indian stock market witnessed a notable downturn last week, with both the Sensex and Nifty indices declining more than 2%, marking the end of a two-week upward trend. The market's performance was heavily influenced by rising oil prices, substantial foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows, and escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which collectively unsettled investors on Dalal Street.
On Friday, the Sensex closed at 73,124 points after a drop of 126 points, while the Nifty 50 settled at 22,600 points, down by 88 points. The broader markets faced even steeper declines, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 100 indices plummeting by as much as 3%. Analysts noted that the disproportionate correction in mid- and small-cap stocks compared to the Nifty was a significant concern, driven by valuation worries and the unwinding of leveraged positions amid rising crude prices.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, highlighted that the increase in the India VIX indicates ongoing volatility in the near term. He emphasized that the persistent tensions in the Middle East could keep crude prices elevated, further impacting market sentiment. Additionally, the global sell-off in equities, particularly influenced by developments in artificial intelligence, is expected to weigh on investor risk appetite. Nair pointed out that inflation trends and the responses of major central banks will be critical in determining market directions moving forward.
In the U.S., stock markets also closed lower on Friday, with rising oil prices and concerns over telecom sector weaknesses contributing to the negative sentiment. The S&P 500 fell by 0.52%, while the Nasdaq Composite and Dow Jones Industrial Average experienced declines of 0.21% and 1.23%, respectively. Similarly, European markets reflected this trend, closing lower due to political uncertainties in France and rising oil prices, despite some positive corporate earnings reports.
Looking ahead, market participants are advised to focus on stock- and sector-specific opportunities as earnings visibility and valuation comfort become increasingly important. The upcoming week is expected to provide further insights into market trends, with analysts closely monitoring inflation data and central bank announcements that could influence investor decisions.
