IndiGo CEO Indicates Fare Hikes Amid Rising Fuel Costs
IndiGo's CEO warns of potential fare increases as fuel prices surge, impacting the airline's financial stability.
IndiGo's parent company reported a net loss of Rs 1,879.1 crore for the September quarter.
Fuel expenses increased by 67.2% year-on-year, significantly affecting profitability.
The airline is exploring fare hikes as a necessary measure to manage rising costs.
IndiGo's Chief Executive Officer, Willie Walsh, has indicated that the airline may need to raise fares due to escalating fuel costs that are straining its financial health. In a recent statement, Walsh emphasized that the airline has 'no choice' but to consider fare increases to counterbalance the surge in fuel expenses.
In the September quarter of the current fiscal year, IndiGo's parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, reported a substantial net loss of Rs 1,879.1 crore, a decrease from the Rs 2,582.1 crore loss recorded in the same period last year. The airline attributed this downturn to exceptionally high fuel prices and the depreciation of the Indian rupee, which have adversely affected its profitability.
The airline's fuel costs skyrocketed by 67.2% year-on-year, reaching Rs 9,966.8 crore in the latest quarter. Total expenses for IndiGo rose to Rs 26,188.4 crore, surpassing the total income of Rs 24,311.9 crore. Despite an increase in total income from Rs 19,599.5 crore in the previous year to Rs 24,311.9 crore, the rising costs have continued to exert pressure on the airline's financial performance.
Walsh noted that the September quarter is typically a slower season for the airline, compounded this year by exceptionally high fuel costs and ongoing geopolitical instability. He mentioned that while IndiGo has implemented prudent capacity reductions and yield management strategies to bolster revenue, these measures have only partially mitigated the impact of rising costs, resulting in a net loss of approximately Rs 19 billion for the quarter.
Looking ahead, Walsh expressed confidence in IndiGo's robust cost structure and liquidity, which he believes will provide the airline with various options to navigate the increasing operational expenses. As the airline continues to assess its financial strategies, fare hikes may become a necessary step to ensure sustainability in the face of rising costs.
