The transaction, valued at approximately Rs 53,000 crore, is set to be the largest foreign investment in an Indian bank.

The United Forum of IDBI Officers and Employees has voiced strong opposition to the proposed sale of a majority stake in IDBI Bank to Fairfax Financial Holdings, a Canada-based firm. During a national convention, the forum called for an immediate suspension of the sale process, advocating for a thorough review under parliamentary oversight. They argue that the current market conditions are volatile, necessitating a cautious approach to the valuation and sale of the bank.

The forum's convener, Devidas Tuljapurkar, expressed concerns that the transaction could undervalue IDBI's assets, capabilities, and future earnings. He emphasized the need for the government to disclose the valuation methods used, the assumptions made, and the treatment of the bank's real estate and other assets. Tuljapurkar highlighted that the public deserves assurance that a national asset is not being sold at an undervalued price.

The proposed sale involves the transfer of a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank for around Rs 53,000 crore (approximately USD 5.5 billion), marking a significant milestone in India's banking privatization efforts. Fairfax is set to acquire the government's 30.48% stake and an additional 30.24% held by the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC). The deal, which values shares at Rs 81 each, exceeds the fair value determined by independent valuation agencies.

Concerns have been raised regarding the broader implications of this sale for the banking sector and social equity. Tuljapurkar pointed out that the decision contradicts previous parliamentary assurances regarding government ownership in IDBI Bank. He stressed that the sale could undermine efforts toward financial inclusion and opportunities for historically disadvantaged communities.

Looking ahead, the transaction is expected to be finalized by the end of the current financial year, pending regulatory approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The United Forum of IDBI Officers and Employees continues to advocate for transparency and accountability in this significant banking transition.
