On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved a major initiative aimed at enhancing India's container manufacturing capabilities, allocating ₹10,000 crore over a span of 13 years, extending until the fiscal year 2040. This decision is part of a broader strategy to strengthen domestic production in response to increasing global demand for containers.

The newly approved scheme comprises four key components: interest subvention assistance, testing and certification support, land leasing assistance, and operational expenditure aid. Specifically, ₹859 crore is designated for interest subvention, which will provide a 3% annual reduction on term loans aimed at capital expenditures, facilitating easier access to funding for manufacturers.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that it will encourage steel manufacturers to produce container-grade steel, thereby positioning India as a leading container manufacturing hub. The scheme mandates that new facilities must achieve an annual capacity of at least 100,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), while expansions of existing facilities must reach a minimum of 25,000 TEUs. Projects are required to be operational within three years of receiving initial approval and must adhere to international container standards.

In addition to the container scheme, the Cabinet also approved a separate ₹1,856 crore scheme focused on the manufacturing of sports goods. This initiative aims to promote domestic production and enhance the availability of sports equipment in India, further contributing to the country's manufacturing landscape.

Looking ahead, the implementation of these schemes will be closely monitored to ensure compliance with the set standards and timelines. The government aims to attract investments and foster innovation in both the container and sports goods sectors, which are expected to have significant economic implications for India in the coming years.
