SEBI plans to review CAS rules and IPO fund utilization monitoring.
Indian households are becoming a significant source of capital in markets.
Over 15 crore unique investors are now participating in Indian capital markets.
During the NDTV Profit Ignite 2026 event, Tuhin Kanta Pandey, the Chairman of SEBI, delivered a keynote address focusing on the integrity of India's capital markets. He emphasized that the true measure of these markets lies in their ability to finance economic growth and connect savers with businesses in need of capital. Pandey noted the increasing role of Indian households as a vital source of funding for the economy.
The discussions at the event highlighted SEBI's ongoing initiatives to strengthen market regulations. Pandey announced that the regulatory body is set to review the Closing Auction System (CAS) after one year, aiming to enhance market efficiency. He also mentioned the introduction of third-party monitoring agencies to ensure that funds raised through Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) are utilized for their intended purposes, thereby protecting investor interests.
In his address, Pandey pointed out that while 63% of Indian households are aware of at least one securities product, only about 9.5% actively participate in the markets. This discrepancy indicates a need for better investor education and access to information. He stressed that investing should be a well-informed decision, urging potential investors to understand the risks involved.
The event also featured insights from various industry leaders who discussed the broader implications of these regulatory changes. The focus on enhancing investor participation and confidence is crucial for the growth of India's capital markets. With a market capitalization of approximately 470 lakh crore and over 15 crore unique investors, the potential for growth remains significant, especially as more households engage with financial markets.
Looking ahead, SEBI is committed to reducing the onboarding time for foreign portfolio investors from months to just five business days, making it easier for international investors to enter the Indian market. The ongoing reforms aim to create a more inclusive and efficient capital market environment, fostering economic growth and innovation in the coming years.
