Trump Announces Russian Diesel Deal to Lower Fuel Prices
US President Donald Trump claims a new agreement with Russia will lead to a significant drop in diesel prices.
Russia to supply 300,000 tonnes of diesel in October, with more to follow.
Trump links the deal to US control of the Strait of Hormuz.
Current diesel prices in the US average $6.27 per gallon, up from $3.67 a year ago.
In a significant announcement, US President Donald Trump stated that Russia has agreed to supply millions of tonnes of diesel fuel to the United States and global markets, which he predicts will lead to a sharp decline in fuel prices. This declaration follows a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Turkmenistan, where Putin expressed his commitment to assist in resolving the conflict between the US and Iran.
Trump detailed the agreement on his platform, Truth Social, describing a 'highly successful discussion' with Putin. He noted that Russia would initially provide over 300,000 tonnes of diesel, with an additional 500,000 tonnes in November and one million tonnes thereafter. Furthermore, he indicated that an extra three million tonnes could be delivered soon, contingent on the operational capacity of Russian refineries.
The president emphasized that this agreement aligns with his administration's strategic control over the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that the combination of Russian diesel supplies and US oversight of this vital waterway would significantly reduce diesel prices for consumers both in America and globally. Trump stated, "Diesel Prices for Americans and, indeed, the world, will be coming down in record numbers and fast."
The Kremlin confirmed Putin's commitment to supplying oil and petroleum products to the US and highlighted discussions on various geopolitical issues, including the Ukrainian crisis and Iran's nuclear ambitions. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak reiterated the supply timeline, confirming readiness to deliver 300,000 tonnes in October, 500,000 in November, and one million in December, potentially increasing to three million tonnes per month in the future.
This announcement comes amid rising diesel prices in the US, which have surged due to disruptions in global energy supplies linked to the Iran conflict and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The average diesel price has escalated to $6.27 per gallon, a significant increase from $3.67 a year ago. As diplomatic efforts to resolve the Iran conflict continue, the implications of this diesel deal could have far-reaching effects on fuel prices and international relations in the energy sector.
