Sensex Drops 273 Points Amid IT Sell-off and Rising Crude Prices
Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty faced declines due to profit booking and rising crude oil prices.
Sensex fell by 273.35 points to 73,333.40
Nifty IT index dropped 1.5% amid selling pressure
Rising crude prices raise concerns over inflation and fiscal deficit
In a notable market shift, the Sensex experienced a decline of 273.35 points, settling at 73,333.40, while the Nifty fell by 70.20 points to 22,683.00 as of 1:30 PM. This downturn follows a brief period of gains, attributed to various factors including profit booking and a notable sell-off in IT shares.
The market's recent performance has been influenced by profit booking as investors took advantage of the previous day's gains. This selling pressure was particularly evident in the IT sector, where the Nifty IT index fell by 1.5%. The decline coincided with the initial public offering filing of Anthropic PBC, which had initially boosted sentiment in the AI trade, benefiting semiconductor stocks in regions like South Korea and Japan.
Analysts have pointed out that the Nifty must maintain levels above 22,800 for any bullish sentiment to return. According to Pabitro Mukherjee from Bajaj Broking, a sustained movement above the 20-day EMA at 22,820 would indicate a potential pullback towards key resistance levels of 23,100-23,200. Conversely, failure to surpass this threshold could lead to continued consolidation within the range of 22,370-22,820.
The rising prices of crude oil have further complicated the market landscape. Brent crude futures are hovering near a six-month high, driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly attacks on Saudi Arabia. This situation raises concerns about supply disruptions and inflation, which could adversely affect India's economy, heavily reliant on energy imports. Siddhartha Khemka from Motilal Oswal Financial Services noted that domestic markets may remain subdued until there is greater clarity on the geopolitical situation and central bank policies.
Looking ahead, market participants are closely monitoring upcoming economic indicators and central bank decisions, particularly from the Federal Reserve, which is anticipated to maintain interest rates before potentially tightening in December. As the market navigates these challenges, investors are advised to remain cautious and vigilant regarding support levels and market trends.
