Hyderabad Woman Alleges Rape by Husband's Friends After Lockdown
An 18-year-old Myanmarese woman claims her husband locked her in their home and sent friends to assault her.
The victim was brought to India from Bangladesh by her husband in May.
Three men have been charged with rape and intimidation following the woman's complaint.
The case emerged when the house owner found her locked inside and helped her escape.
An 18-year-old woman from Myanmar has reported a harrowing incident in Hyderabad, claiming that her husband, Mohammad Fayaz, repeatedly locked her inside their rented home and sent three of his friends to sexually assault her. The disturbing allegations came to light on October 23, when the owner of the property broke the lock to collect overdue rent and discovered the woman inside.
According to the victim, who previously resided in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, Fayaz brought her to India in May without notifying her family. Shortly after their arrival, they were married in Hyderabad. However, about a month into their marriage, she alleges that Fayaz introduced three friends—Ahmad Mujeeb, Noor Kamal, and Zia-ur-Rehman—who also hail from Myanmar and live in Hyderabad, to stay at their residence.
The woman detailed in her complaint that her husband would lock her inside the house before leaving, allowing his friends to enter and assault her. She reported that two of the men threatened her with death if she disclosed the incidents to anyone. The fear of retaliation and uncertainty about where to seek help delayed her reporting of the abuse.
The situation escalated on October 23 when the house owner discovered the locked door and forcibly opened it, enabling the woman to escape. She managed to contact her family using a relative’s mobile phone and was subsequently taken to a relative's home for safety. On October 26, her relative, Mohammad Rasheed, accompanied her to a police station where she filed her complaint.
Law enforcement has since registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the four men, charging them with rape, wrongful confinement, and criminal intimidation. This case highlights the urgent need for support systems for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, particularly among vulnerable populations such as migrants.
