Tensions have surged following recent territorial gains by the Houthis.
On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia executed an airstrike on an oil facility located in Sanaa, Yemen, which is under the control of the Houthi rebel group. This military action was announced shortly after the Saudi-led coalition issued an evacuation order for civilians in the vicinity, marking the first such directive since hostilities intensified in recent weeks.
The evacuation order specifically targeted the Yemeni Petroleum Company site and adjacent storage areas, indicating a heightened state of alert. Following the strike, videos surfaced on social media showing thick black smoke billowing from the facility, which was reportedly set ablaze due to the airstrike. Local residents reported hearing a significant explosion, underscoring the strike's impact.
While the Saudi-led coalition has yet to officially confirm the airstrike, the Houthi-affiliated Al-Masirah TV channel reported the incident, labeling it as an act of aggression. In a statement, the oil company affected by the strike assured that the attack would not disrupt oil reserves or civilian supplies, claiming that adequate stocks were secured in safe locations to meet demand.
The conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed Houthis has escalated recently, particularly after the Houthis captured strategic territories near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital maritime route for oil transport. The situation has prompted international concern, with many countries advising their citizens in Saudi Arabia to exercise caution and adhere to local directives.
In response to the airstrike, Houthi military spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree issued a warning on social media, threatening a severe retaliation against Saudi targets, including Riyadh's international airport and oil facilities. The ongoing tensions have raised fears of further escalation in the region, with both sides preparing for potential future confrontations.
