In a significant shift from their original plan, the INDIA Alliance has renamed their upcoming protest from a 'Mock Parliament' to a 'People's Impeachment' aimed at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Scheduled for Friday at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, this event will involve a motion for impeachment against the election chief, reflecting the opposition's intent to avoid any actions that may be interpreted as contempt of Parliament.

The decision to modify the event's format came after a meeting of the INDIA alliance leaders, including prominent figures such as Priyanka Gandhi and former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. The gathering aimed to strategize on how to effectively present their grievances regarding the electoral process. The initial concept of a parliamentary-style debate has been scrapped in favor of the new format, which seeks to engage the public more directly.

Meira Kumar has been appointed to oversee the 'People's Impeachment', with assistance from a yet-to-be-named member of the Samajwadi Party. The proceedings will commence at 3 PM and are expected to run until 7:30 PM. Mallikarjun Kharge will initiate the arguments, while Rahul Gandhi will conclude them, ensuring that key opposition voices are highlighted throughout the event.

Approximately 30 speakers from 19 political parties are slated to participate, each allotted five minutes to present their views. Notably, the Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress will have slightly longer speaking times of ten minutes. Additionally, individuals who have been removed from the electoral rolls will also have a platform to voice their concerns, alongside three representatives from civil society.

The central theme of the 'People's Impeachment' revolves around the electoral roll removals that have reportedly impacted around 16.5 crore voters, a figure that the Congress party emphasizes. The event will be broadcast live across various social media platforms, including YouTube, concluding with the national anthem, 'Jana Gana Mana'. This initiative marks a pivotal moment for the opposition as they seek to mobilize public sentiment against the electoral commission's actions.
