In a significant political move, the INDIA bloc will conduct a public impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on October 30. This event will take place at the official residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, with former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar presiding over the proceedings. The decision to shift the venue was made after the Delhi Police denied permission for the event at two previously planned locations.
The meeting to finalize the details was held at Kharge's residence, attended by key leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and CPI(M) MP John Brittas. During this meeting, it was emphasized that the event would serve as a genuine reflection of public concerns regarding the electoral process, rather than a mere mock exercise.
Kharge will initiate the motion for impeachment, while Rahul Gandhi is expected to conclude the discussions. The event will also feature testimonies from individuals impacted by the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, highlighting the real-life implications of electoral policies. Brittas noted that the alliance's approach aims to resonate with the aspirations of the public, indicating a serious tone for the proceedings.
The public impeachment is strategically timed ahead of the Opposition's rally on November 1, which will address allegations of electoral fraud and manipulation. Kharge has been vocal about the need for ongoing agitation against perceived electoral injustices, asserting that the opposition parties are united in their efforts to safeguard democratic processes. He remarked that the fight for democracy requires active participation to awaken public consciousness.
As the event approaches, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the SIR and the alleged theft of votes. He stated that the discussions would shed light on the struggles faced by citizens and the broader implications for democracy. The INDIA bloc is preparing to send a strong message of unity and resolve as they advocate for the protection of voting rights and electoral integrity.
