Marissa Roy, a 34-year-old lawyer of Indian descent, is poised to become the next city attorney of Los Angeles after a successful campaign that garnered her 66.53% of the votes in the November 3 election. With a total of 488,064 votes, she significantly outperformed her opponent, John McKinney, who received 245,511 votes and has since conceded the race, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
Roy's campaign was distinctive, blending political messaging with a vibrant cultural flair. Her use of Bollywood music in campaign videos and her signature purple blazers captured public attention and set her apart from traditional candidates. The slogan 'Let's sue it' resonated with voters, reflecting her commitment to addressing legal issues in a relatable manner.
Born in Monrovia, California, to an Indian immigrant mother and an American father, Roy's educational background is impressive. She graduated from Flintridge Preparatory School, received a scholarship to the University of Southern California, and earned her law degree from Yale University. Her legal career began at the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office in 2017, where she focused on cases related to wage theft and worker exploitation. She later served as outside counsel for Los Angeles County and as a deputy attorney general in the California Department of Justice.
One of Roy's notable achievements includes her role in the legal case against Meta, where she contributed to California's lawsuit alleging that the company hid the negative impacts of its platforms on children. This litigation culminated in a substantial $17 billion settlement in August, showcasing her effectiveness in tackling significant legal challenges.
As she prepares to take office, Roy has pledged to transform the city attorney's office into the largest public interest law firm in Los Angeles. Her focus will be on holding landlords, corporations, and employers accountable for exploiting residents, indicating a strong commitment to social justice and community welfare.
