Mamata Banerjee Survives Knife Attack in Kolkata Incident

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was involved in a frightening incident on Tuesday evening when a woman attempted to attack her with a knife. The event unfolded around 6 PM near Banerjee's residence in Kalighat, Kolkata, as she was inaugurating a Durga Puja pandal. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) reported that the assailant claimed to be Banerjee's niece and was in an intoxicated state at the time of the incident.

According to TMC MP Dola Sen, who filed a complaint with the Kalighat police, the attacker was identified as Tannishtha Saha, a civic volunteer with a history of drug addiction. Sen's letter detailed how Saha attempted to breach the security perimeter surrounding Banerjee. When questioned about her identity, Saha falsely claimed that Banerjee was her paternal aunt. After being denied entry, she reportedly lay down on the road and began to shout abuses, revealing the knife she had concealed.

The TMC quickly responded to the situation, with party workers overpowering Saha and ensuring she was detained until police arrived. Despite the seriousness of the incident, no senior police officials, including the deputy commissioner of police for the area, responded to inquiries regarding the attack.
