On October 8, a group of 14 students from Maharashtra, led by Shravani Bua, was traveling on the Goa Express to Delhi for a protest organized by the Cockroach Janata Party. The group was first intercepted at Bhusawal station in Jalgaon district by Maharashtra police, who requested the students to accompany them for questioning. When the students demanded a legal warrant, the police eventually left but the situation escalated as the train reached Itarsi station.
At Itarsi, a significant number of Madhya Pradesh police officers entered the train and forcibly removed the students, with Bua alleging that they were manhandled during the process. Following the incident, the students were taken to Park Club and Resort in Itarsi, where they reported being held in a hall under police supervision. Bua expressed concern for a fellow student who may have sustained an injury during the altercation but was not allowed medical attention.
The detainment of these students is part of a broader crackdown on activists and student organizations ahead of the planned protest on October 10. Authorities have reportedly conducted preventive detentions of various student leaders and activists who participated in protests earlier this year, aiming to disrupt mobilization efforts in Delhi. Students have shared experiences of police surveillance and intimidation, including home visits and warnings against traveling to the capital.
The implications of these detentions extend beyond individual cases, reflecting a growing trend of state repression against dissent in Maharashtra and across India. The crackdown has raised concerns among student organizations and civil rights advocates, who view these actions as attempts to stifle free expression and assembly. Reports indicate that thousands of individuals have been detained nationwide in anticipation of the protests, highlighting the tense atmosphere surrounding political dissent.
As the situation unfolds, the detained students, including Bua, remain determined to reach Delhi for the protest. Bua stated, "We will try to reach Delhi somehow once we are released," indicating their resolve to continue their activism despite police efforts to thwart their plans. The coming days will be critical as the protest date approaches, and further developments regarding the students' detainment and the overall political climate in the region are expected.
