A Learjet 60 business jet tragically crashed in a residential area of Greenacres, Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday afternoon, killing all nine people aboard. The aircraft, which had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas, was en route to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when it went down around 12:50 p.m. local time, as confirmed by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
Flight-tracking data indicated that the jet, registered as N722BD and operated by LR60271 LLC, experienced a rapid loss of altitude shortly before the crash. It was flying at approximately 35,000 feet before descending abruptly near Military Trail, close to a mobile home community. The impact created a significant crater on the road and scattered debris across the vicinity, damaging at least one mobile home and bringing down power lines, which ignited fires in the area.
Videos shared online captured the final moments of the jet as it plunged toward the ground, resulting in a massive fireball upon impact. Dashcam footage also documented the crash and the ensuing flames, with thick black smoke billowing from the wreckage. The scene was chaotic, with burning debris littering the surroundings and emergency responders rushing to the site.
In response to the incident, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched investigations to ascertain the cause of the crash. The crash site is located just a few miles from Palm Beach International Airport, and authorities are working to identify the victims and determine the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
As investigations continue, the community is left to grapple with the aftermath of this devastating accident. The loss of nine lives has raised concerns about aviation safety, prompting calls for thorough examinations of flight operations and regulations. The FAA and NTSB are expected to provide updates as they gather more information and analyze the data from the flight's final moments.
