MLAs Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jauramajra resign from AAP, blaming leadership for Punjab's issues.
They highlight failures in tackling drug abuse, corruption, and public safety, questioning the government's effectiveness.
The resignations pose a challenge for AAP as it prepares for the 2027 assembly elections.
In a significant political upheaval in Punjab, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jauramajra have announced their resignations, citing a lack of accountability and failure to deliver on electoral promises by the party leadership. During a press conference held at the Chandigarh Press Club, the MLAs expressed their discontent with the governance of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the national leadership, particularly targeting Arvind Kejriwal and Bibhav Kumar for the current political climate in the state.
The legislators articulated their grievances by stating that AAP has strayed from the commitments made to the electorate, particularly regarding drug eradication and corruption. They pointed out the ongoing drug crisis, including the alarming prevalence of narcotics and the detrimental impact on families, despite AAP being in power for over four years. They also referenced the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota as indicative of the deteriorating law and order situation, raising concerns about public safety.
Further, Pathanmajra and Jauramajra criticized the government for its inability to address rampant corruption, citing incidents of bribery in various government offices. They also highlighted unfulfilled promises to farmers, including the assurance of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops and the procurement of essential agricultural products. Additionally, they raised issues regarding the pending dues for government employees and the alarming state of educational and healthcare facilities in Punjab.
The implications of these resignations extend beyond individual grievances, as they reflect broader discontent within the party and could impact AAP's standing in Punjab ahead of the upcoming 2027 assembly elections. The criticism from within the party poses a challenge for AAP's leadership, which must now navigate the fallout and work to retain support among its base while addressing the issues raised by the resigning MLAs.
In response to the resignations, AAP Punjab president Aman Arora stated that the departing legislators were not aligned with the party's vision. He emphasized that anyone committed to Punjab's interests is welcome to work with AAP, indicating a potential strategy to mitigate dissent. The party's immediate focus will be on addressing the concerns raised and preventing further fragmentation within its ranks as it prepares for the electoral battle ahead.
