In a significant diplomatic move, India has cast its vote in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution aimed at terminating the economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba. This decision was made during a session on Wednesday, where the resolution garnered support from 130 of the 193 member states, while 17 nations opposed it and 25 abstained.
The resolution, which calls for an end to the longstanding embargo, was presented by Soumya Nair, Counsellor at India's Permanent Mission to the UN. She emphasized that the Assembly has consistently urged the cessation of such restrictions, which undermine the sovereignty of nations. Nair reiterated India's commitment to multilateralism, stating that international issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
Highlighting the detrimental effects of the embargo, Nair referenced a report from the UN Secretary-General that detailed the severe impact on Cuba's economy and essential services. She noted that Cuba's healthcare system is facing a shortage of over 60% of essential medicines, and food production has plummeted by more than 50% over the past five years. The restrictions on fuel exports have further exacerbated an ongoing energy crisis, disrupting vital services such as healthcare, education, and food distribution.
The resolution, titled 'Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,' reflects a broader international consensus against US sanctions. However, it is important to note that such General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding. The US has maintained its embargo for over six decades, a policy rooted in the aftermath of the 1959 Cuban Revolution and subsequent alignment with the Soviet Union.
The vote comes at a time of heightened tensions between the US and Cuba, particularly following a confrontation during the Assembly session between US Ambassador Mike Waltz and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla. This incident underscores the ongoing diplomatic rift, with the US accusing Cuba's leadership of hypocrisy amid the humanitarian crisis faced by ordinary Cubans.
