GIFT Nifty indicates a flat opening at 22,610, up only 2 points.
Crude oil prices have dropped after reaching six-month highs, but remain a concern for inflation.
The US Federal Reserve's upcoming policy meeting is expected to influence market sentiment.
Indian stock market indices, including the Sensex and Nifty, are anticipated to commence trading on a muted note on Monday. This follows four consecutive days of losses, with GIFT Nifty indicating a flat start at around 22,610, reflecting a slight increase of just 2 points. The market sentiment is likely to be affected by weak performance in Asian markets, rising crude oil prices, and ongoing geopolitical tensions.
The backdrop to this cautious market outlook includes a significant decline in Indian equities on Friday, where the Sensex fell by 125.56 points to close at 73,123.83, while the Nifty dropped by 87.65 points to end at 22,600. Investors are particularly wary ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision scheduled for later this week, as well as major corporate earnings announcements that could further influence market dynamics.
Asian markets opened lower on Monday, reflecting investor concerns over high energy prices and geopolitical uncertainties. The MSCI Asia-Pacific index outside Japan decreased by 0.1 percent. Japan's Nikkei index fell by 0.8 percent, continuing its downward trend from the previous week, while South Korea's Kospi index experienced a decline of 0.4 percent, marking nearly a 19 percent drop for October. Conversely, US equity futures showed slight positivity, with both S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.2 percent, potentially providing some support to global market sentiment.
In the commodities market, crude oil prices experienced a decline after reaching near six-month highs last week. Brent crude futures fell by $1.56 to $115.16 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate dropped by $1.60 to $101.67 per barrel. This decrease follows reports of diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions in the Middle East, which had previously raised concerns about energy supply disruptions. Despite the drop, elevated crude prices continue to pose risks to India's inflation outlook and corporate margins.
Looking ahead, the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting on October 27-28 is expected to be a pivotal event for global markets. While the central bank is anticipated to maintain current interest rates, investors will closely monitor any guidance regarding future policy directions. According to Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, the near-term outlook for Indian equities remains cautious, influenced by crude prices, geopolitical developments, and signals from the Fed. He notes that while corporate earnings may present opportunities, a broader market recovery may be challenging without a reduction in external pressures.
