Indian stock markets are poised for a significant downturn as GIFT Nifty futures have dropped by 224 points, or nearly 1%, indicating a weak start for the Sensex and Nifty indices. This decline comes despite positive momentum in global markets, particularly in technology stocks driven by optimism surrounding artificial intelligence. The GIFT Nifty was recorded at 22,588 around 8:00 AM, reflecting concerns over rising crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions ahead of the US Federal Reserve's upcoming policy announcement.

On Tuesday, Indian equities showed minimal movement, with the Sensex closing at 73,598.67, down just 8.08 points, and the Nifty at 22,749.75, down 3.45 points. The market's stagnation was attributed to volatility linked to the expiry of futures and options contracts. Foreign institutional investors remained net buyers, acquiring shares worth Rs 4,240 crore, while domestic institutions sold shares totaling Rs 1,250 crore.

Asian markets experienced a rally on Wednesday, buoyed by renewed investor interest in technology stocks, particularly those linked to artificial intelligence. The MSCI Asia-Pacific index, excluding Japan, rose by 0.85%, while Japan's Nikkei and South Korea's Kospi saw gains of 1.2% and over 3%, respectively. Meanwhile, US equity futures remained stable as investors awaited the Federal Reserve's policy decision, which is anticipated to maintain current interest rates.

Crude oil prices have surged sharply, with Brent crude rising by $1.48 to $115.36 per barrel, following an attack on a Saudi Arabian refinery that heightened concerns over energy supply disruptions. This increase in oil prices is likely to weigh on Indian markets, which are already facing pressure from geopolitical uncertainties and inflation concerns.

Looking ahead, Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, indicated that Indian equities may remain cautious as investors await signals from the Federal Reserve regarding future interest rates. He emphasized that the trajectory of Indian markets will largely depend on global market movements, crude oil prices, and foreign investment flows. The upcoming Fed decision is expected to be pivotal, with inflation and geopolitical tensions continuing to loom over market sentiment.
