A former officer of the Bangladesh Air Force, KM Tahsif Souri, was found dead in a river in Dhaka on Thursday, just a day after he was reported missing. The 28-year-old's body was discovered by river police in the Tongi Bandar Ghat area following a call to the national emergency helpline. His identity was confirmed through personal items found with him, including his mobile phone and wristwatch.
Souri had reportedly recorded a video showing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's departure from Bangladesh on August 5, 2024, during a time of significant political unrest. The video has drawn attention to his death, which is being treated with caution by authorities. The body was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, which remains unknown at this time.
According to reports, Souri lived with his family in Uttara's Sector 18. His father, KM Enayetul Karim Helal, expressed concerns about his son's safety, noting that Souri had previously mentioned feeling apprehensive but did not disclose specific worries. Souri was dismissed from the Air Force on disciplinary grounds and had worked for various organizations, including the Bangladesh Cricket Board and Virgo Tobacco.
The circumstances surrounding Souri's disappearance and subsequent death have raised questions, particularly due to his involvement in recording the video linked to Hasina's exit from the country. On August 5, Hasina reportedly fled Dhaka via military helicopter amid mass protests that led to the downfall of her government, eventually boarding a Bangladesh Air Force aircraft bound for India.
As investigations continue, police have yet to establish any direct connection between Souri's death and the video he recorded. The community is left in shock, and the implications of this incident could resonate within the political landscape of Bangladesh as the situation unfolds.
