Traders in Delhi have formally requested a brief meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to discuss their concerns regarding the upcoming INDIA bloc rally scheduled for November 1 at Ramlila Maidan. The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) fears that the event, which is expected to attract around 1 million participants, may significantly disrupt business operations during the crucial Diwali shopping season.

In a letter addressed to Gandhi, CTI chairman Brijesh Goyal emphasized the potential negative impact on commerce in 20 markets located within a 1- to 5-km radius of the rally site. This marks the second appeal made by the traders' body within a span of four days, highlighting their urgency to protect their businesses during one of the busiest times of the year.

Goyal articulated the traders' position, stating, "We don't want a fight; we want dialogue." He noted that they are requesting just 20 minutes of Gandhi's time to discuss their concerns. The traders believe that if they can be assured that the rally will enhance business and attract more customers, they would be willing to reconsider their stance. However, if evidence suggests that the rally would lead to financial losses, they are calling for a postponement until after Diwali.

The markets identified by the CTI include notable areas such as Chandni Chowk, Bhagirath Palace, and Karol Bagh, among others. The INDIA bloc rally aims to exert pressure on the government regarding allegations of electoral malpractice, specifically the so-called “vote chori” issue, and to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar due to alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process.

The political climate surrounding this rally is charged, as it follows a recent ‘March for Democracy’ led by opposition leaders, including Gandhi, which aimed to protest against perceived electoral injustices. With the upcoming rally, the opposition bloc is determined to maintain momentum in their campaign against the government, emphasizing their commitment to democratic processes and accountability.
