In a significant development, Russia has halted its military operations in the Kherson province of Ukraine as a localized ceasefire comes into effect. This ceasefire, which began at 01:00 GMT on Tuesday, aims to facilitate a humanitarian mission led by US First Lady Melania Trump, allowing for vital aid deliveries and evacuations from the beleaguered town of Oleshky.
The ceasefire was officially announced on October 23, following negotiations that involved not only Melania Trump but also Pope Leo, as part of broader efforts to rekindle peace discussions between Moscow and Kyiv after years of conflict. The agreement is particularly crucial for the residents of Oleshky, who have been facing severe shortages of food, medicine, and other essential supplies due to the ongoing hostilities.
According to the United Nations, around 2,000 people remain stranded in Oleshky, unable to evacuate due to the presence of landmines and drone attacks in the vicinity. The town, which had a pre-war population of approximately 24,000, has been under Russian control since the early days of the invasion in February 2022. The situation has been exacerbated by extensive war damage and flooding caused by the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in 2023.
The localized ceasefire is expected to last until at least Saturday, although the potential for extension remains amid the ongoing distrust between the conflicting parties. Negotiators involved in the humanitarian mission have indicated that essential supplies, including medical assistance, food, and water, will be delivered to Oleshky prior to the establishment of evacuation corridors.
Looking ahead, the success of this ceasefire and the humanitarian mission could serve as a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict, potentially paving the way for renewed peace talks. However, the deep-seated mistrust between Russia and Ukraine poses significant challenges to any long-term resolution.
