In a significant food safety operation during the Diwali festivities, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Nagpur has confiscated 219.4 kg of spices valued at ₹77.12 lakh. The inspections took place across various locations in Nagpur, including Kalamna, Itwari, Wadi, and Nagpur Rural, highlighting serious concerns regarding food hygiene.

The FDA's initiative aimed to ensure the safety of food products during the festive season, which is often marked by increased consumption of various food items. R R Shah, the Assistant Commissioner of the FDA in Nagpur, reported that the inspections uncovered several violations of Schedule IV hygiene requirements. These included food products being stored directly on the ground, inadequate packaging, incorrect labeling, and a general lack of cleanliness in processing areas.

The seized spices are under scrutiny due to suspicions of being substandard or adulterated, with Shah emphasizing that the determination of their quality will rely on laboratory analysis. "Whether the spices contain unidentified substances or fail to meet prescribed quality standards will be established only through laboratory testing," he stated, indicating the importance of scientific verification in food safety.

In addition to the spices, the FDA's Diwali drive is also monitoring other food items such as edible oils, sweets, dry fruits, chocolates, and namkeens. Traditional Maharashtrian snacks, including chakli and breakfast items, are also being inspected. This comprehensive approach aims to safeguard public health during a time when food consumption typically rises.

The FDA has announced that further actions will be taken based on the laboratory results, which are expected within 14 days. This timeline will dictate the next steps in addressing any violations found during the inspections. The food safety teams will continue their efforts throughout the festival, ensuring that products and establishments across Nagpur and its rural areas meet safety standards.
